A small accenting pattern is placed at the side “seams” as a design element. The waist is shaped by changing the needle size only in order not to disturbe the beautiful stitch pattern combination. All rolled edges are worked in Stockinette stitch. Some easy modifications can be done by omitting the waist shaping to make it a more boxy shape and shortening the length to your liking. 12 sizes from 32 3/4” to 58 1/“ with approximately 1” positive ease. This dickey design is a clever addition to your layer collection. Wear it on top of a sweater for an extra layer or over a shirt under the overcoat when it is not that cold. There is no added bulk and much needed coverage of chest and neck areas. When you go inside and it is too warm, just take it off as a cowl without taking off your overcoat. The dickey is worked flat in a very easy construction without any seams. Work stitch pattern for side #1 to the neck, form an opening for a head, and continue working the pattern for side #2 to end. When done, the neck stitches are picked up and the cowl is worked in the round. Here is the fun part. This dickey is switchable since it has completely different looks for side #1 and side #2. Make a good-size swatch. I recommend the size of not less than 6×6 inches. It gives you more information and it pays off. Use the yarn intended for the project. Start with suggested needles. Knit the swatch for the main stitch pattern (not always Stockinette Stitch) using appropriate needle size. If there are few stitch patterns in the main body, make a swatch for each. The gauges can be different. Follow (if you wish) this example. You can choose your pattern instead. My pattern has a multiple of 8 sts. I have 48 sts now. Begin with few rows of Garter stitch for stability of fabric. Follow with the main pattern for about 5 rows. Keep 4 sts on each side in Garter stitch. Take a tapestry needle with about 3/4 yd of a contrasting color thread or yarn. Next right side row: using thread mark the first st that is 10th st from the right edge (stitches at the very edge can be distorted), mark every 5th st after that until the last st (9 sts left). Leave enough thread on the first and the last marked stitches to go up and across the last row. The thread is going to hang down for now. Knit 10 rows following the set pattern.
